Ask a Music Supervisor

A practical, no-fluff walkthrough of how to plan, produce, and release your debut indie album without a label. Covers home studio setup, mixing on a budget, distribution choices, and building a release-day plan that actually moves the needle.

About this replay

This workshop is built for solo artists and small bands who are sitting on a folder of demos and want to turn them into a real release. We'll start with the mindset shift required to finish an album (not just keep tweaking it), then move into the technical and business decisions that shape every indie release. In the first section, we cover home studio fundamentals: room treatment on a budget, why your interface matters less than you think, and the three plugins that will get you 80% of the way to a professional sound. We'll listen to before/after examples from real student projects. The middle section is dedicated to the production-to-master pipeline. You'll learn a repeatable mixing workflow, when to hire a mastering engineer vs. use AI mastering tools like LANDR or eMastered, and how to prep your files for distribution. We'll also discuss loudness targets for streaming platforms and why chasing -8 LUFS is usually a mistake. The final section is the business side: choosing between Bandcamp, DistroKid, TuneCore, and Amuse; setting up your splits and publishing; pre-save campaigns; and a realistic 6-week release timeline. We'll close with a Q&A on common pitfalls — including the one that costs most indie artists their first month of streaming royalties. Whether you're releasing a 4-track EP or a full LP, you'll leave with a checklist, a timeline, and clear next steps.

What you'll learn

  • Set up a functional home recording space for under $500
  • Build a repeatable mixing workflow you can apply to every song
  • Choose the right distributor for your goals and budget
  • Plan a 6-week release campaign that builds momentum before launch day
  • Avoid the most common publishing and metadata mistakes that cost indie artists royalties
